FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 30, 2004
GLOBALINQ to Help Bridge Digital Divide for Potomac, MD
Community
(ALEXANDRIA, VA) - GLOBALINQ Technologies, Inc. announced
today that it has pledged its support for a new computer lab
at the Tobytown Community Center.
Donnell Wilson will now be able to do his homework closer
to home. The 16-year-old Wootton student will now have access
to a new computer lab at the Tobytown Community Center, courtesy
of the Montgomery County Council.
At a March
24, 2004 ceremony, Tobytown residents celebrated the opening
of a new computer lab, funded through a grant from the Montgomery
County Council and donations from local businesses, including
GLOBALINQ.
The approximately 18 children and 100 residents of Tobytown
who regularly use the center will be able to use the computers
for free.
The digital
divide is a term that has been coined to reflect the difference
in access to and proficiency with high-tech equipment. Studies
have shown that African-Americans typically have a lower access
rate to the Internet. The lab hopes to address this issue
in this historically African-American neighborhood. Situated
off River Road in Potomac, the historic community of Tobytown
was founded by former slaves in 1875. Tobytown is geographically
isolated and does not have access to public transportation.
Some residents therefore have a difficult time getting to
the library to do research, but now, they will be able to
do so just steps away from their homes.
